"Second Biennial Freja Nordsiek Figure-making Lecture: Colormaps 1"

by George Hine

Friday, September 8, 2017 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Abstract: A proper figure can convey an enormous amount of information in a short time. An image is a powerful illustration of two variable dependences. The proper choice of colormap, however, can make the difference between universal understanding and general confusion. I will discuss the familiar topic of colormaps, introducing a framework for interpreting and discussing qualities of colormaps and outline the merits and faults of commonly used colormaps. This framework will be applied to customize colormaps, optimizing for particular situations.
