"Experimental Investigation into the Limits of Light Trapping"

In 1982 Yoblanovich published a seminal paper on the limits of absorption of scattered light. In this so-called "ray optic limit" or "ergodic limit" an absorbing material with a scattering surface absorbs as if it is a factor of 4n2 thicker. However, this calculation breaks down for thin absorbing materials. In 2011 Munday proposed an alternative calculation which incorporates the local density of optical states (LDOS). By manipulating the LDOS of an absorbing material the ergodic limit can be surpassed. However, this has not been experimentally demonstrated. This talk will look at this ergodic limit and the LDOS limit as well as our experimental investigations of these limits.
