"Chaotic Iterated Maps and Other Mythical Beasts"

Chimera states can form in a collection of oscillators with nonlocal coupling. These dynamical states are characterized by a coexistence of synchrony and incoherence. This is surprising because the oscillators split into two populations with qualitatively different behavior, even though nothing about the problem privileges one group of oscillators over the other. Recent work has shown that similar dynamical states arise in collections of chaotic Rössler oscillators and chaotic iterated maps. The iterated map system was implemented in an optical experiment using a spatial light modulator. Experimental results and numerical simulations will be presented.
