"Radiation Pressure:  Detection and Switchability"

by Dakang Ma

Friday, February 27, 2015 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Advisor:  Assistant Professor Jeremy Munday

Light carries momentum and thus exerts radiation pressure when it is reflected or absorbed. Here we demonstrate our first quantitative experiment of radiation pressure on a microcantilever in an ambient environment. We also make a broadband optical switchable device based on polymer dispersed liquid crystal, which has potential application in solar sails.
