"Amplitude Dependence of Reversibility in a Granular Medium Subject to Cyclic Shear"

Using a laser sheet scanning technique, we track in three dimensions individual particles within a granular medium. We construct a nearest neighbor network from these data to represent the structure of the system as it evolves in time. By comparing the network structure at two different times we are able to measure the reversibility of deformations in the ensemble during steady and cyclic shear. We find that shear deformations become increasingly irreversible with greater shear amplitude.
