"How to Get a Job outside Academia"

by David Meichle

Friday, June 19, 2015 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Thinking about a career outside academia? Unsure how to get hired or write a cover letter and resume? Don't know how to find an appropriate position?

For this informal graduate student seminar, I would like to share my experience looking for a private-sector job and will provide some detailed suggestions on how to find positions which are a good match, how to write the all-important cover letter, what to put in a resume, and what to expect in phone and onsite interviews. After countless applications, a dozen phone interviews and multiple on-site interviews, I hope my experience and the information I've accumulated will be helpful to anyone thinking about their future career or actively applying. This talk will be focused specifically on the nuts-and-bolts of applying, writing a cover letter and resume, and interviewing.
