Three-Meter Dynamo:  Results and Future

by Qin Liu

Friday, October 11, 2013 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Advisor:  Professor Dan Lathrop

Previous and new experimental results will be presented from the Three-Meter Geodynamo, which is geometrically similar to the Earth’s core. In the water-filled device, a systematic study of precessional forced flows and differential rotations was carried out. At high rotation rates in the precession forcing experiment, free shear layers were observed. Bi-stable behavior was found in the turbulent rotating flow between the two spheres, for certain ratios of the inner and outer rotation rates.
