Generalizing Gyrokinetic Simulations to Include Non-Maxwellian Equilibrium Distributions

by George Wilkie

Friday, October 25, 2013 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Advisor:  Professor Bill Dorland

Species with sources or sinks in weakly-collisional plasmas, such as alpha particles in fusion devices, can maintain non-Maxwellian distributions as equilibrium. Under certain ordering assumptions, one can solve the equations describing fluctuations about this equilibrium. This capability has been implemented in the GS2 code and validated. Simple linear comparisons with "equivalent Maxwellian" results are presented.
