"Laser Wakefield Acceleration with Mid IR Laser Pulses"

Abstract: The recent development of high energy, femtosecond lasers in the mid-infrared opens up new opportunities for relativistic laser plasma experiments, including laser wakefield electron acceleration. In particular, the longer wavelength permits easier access to the near critical density regime, where self-focusing, absorption and parametric instabilities are enhanced. I will review some of the basic principles of electron acceleration driven in this regime, important scaling parameters, and our first experimental results demonstrating the onset and characteristics of the accelerated electron bunches.
