"Connecting Data with Competing Opinion Models"

by Keith Burghardt

Friday, September 12, 2014 -- 12:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room, 1207 Energy Research Facility

Advisor:  Associate Professor Michelle Girvan

We introduce a contagion-like opinion model that includes dynamic resistance to alternative opinions. We show that this model can describe candidate vote distributions, spatial vote correlations, and slow opinion consensus with sensible parameter values. This may suggest that all these distinct behaviors, previously understood using distinct models, may in fact be different aspects of a unified description of human behavior, described by our new model.
