The Department of Defense recently announced the recipients of the 2020 Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) programs for 2020:

The MURI Program is a prestigious and selective annual program from the DoD that supports targeted research conducted by multi-disciplinary, multi-university teams.  MURI programs are highly visible and influential, and can provide sustained research support for up to 5 years.  There were only 26 teams selected, and only one team per topic area.

Although UMD is not leading any of the teams, the University of Maryland was part of six winning teams this year and we are tied with the University of Illinois for the highest representation on this list.

As in the past, IREAP faculty have figured prominently in this program.  Please join me in congratulating the IREAP faculty who contributed to two successful teams in 2020:

Topic #5, Robust Photonic Materials with High Order Topological Protection
Lead:  University of Illinois (Gaurav Bahl)
UMD participant:  Mohammad Hafezi

Topic #22, Exploration of Fundamental Limits to High Power Electromagnetic Amplification
Lead:  University of New Mexico (Edl Schamiloglu)
UMD participants:  Tom Antonsen, Phil Sprangle
