Journal ArticlePlasma, Accelerator, and Nuclear PhysicsThe effects of magnetic field on the stimulated Brillouin and Raman scattering processes are studied. The formalism applies to plasmas produced by CO2 lasers and to electron cyclotron heating of toroidal systems by an extraordinary electromagnetic wave. In the case of laser fusion the plasma is magnetized due to the self‐generated dc magnetic field, while in toroidal plasmas it is due to the external magnetic field. The magnetic field greatly reduces the threshold for Brillouin backscattering by the lower hybrid wave. The Raman scattering by the upper hybrid wave has substantial growth rate even for large kλD because of the reduction of linear Landau damping due to the magnetic field.
